The only person who needs convincing of that is the ump and as long as there's sport, thwre will be playets teying to trick thwm. "Waving a fist somewhere near the ball" so to speak.

If memory serves, it was brought in like this to encourage the player to be first to the ball and to make the play rather than reward the player sitting off the play, waitinf ro make the easy tackle. It isn't perfect but I think it is preferable this way
