The rumor is that conservative elements of our government have expressed concern to record companies concerning the negative messages that they perceive to be coming from the industry. As a result, they have put pressure on them and, in turn, the artists, to release 'positive, God-based' content. P.O.D., Creed, Moby, and now Zwan are all part of this effort.

There's nothing 'wrong' with Christian music or anything - don't get me wrong. But, if this rumor is true (it sounds a little contrived to me), I think the government should not be attempting to influence musical content, art, etc. Apart from all that, whether or not they're christian or if they worship martians - musically, Zwan's debut album sounds like a rehash of some of the more boring Smashing Pumpkins pieces. It seems like Billy Corgan has lost his teeth a bit. I guess I liked him better when he was angry. I guess I also expected more contributions from the other members of this band, but most of the songs are penned by Corgan. I wanted to hear something new, but I don't feel like I got that. This is more like the Pumpkins redux.

Given that, if Billy Corgan really has converted to Christianity and is now wanting to write 'message music' - it certainly is some of the best Christian music around. I used to do a Christian rock show back in college when Petra and Stryper were huge but they seemed very derivative of secular acts so to have a creative, artsy band like Zwan would have been great to be able to play.

All that said, I still have to examine the lyrics (alas, not provided with the album), to really decide myself if I feel like they really have a Christian message. Basically, unless a group sings about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as being the seminal moment in history that saved the souls of all those who believe that fact, I have a hard time telling the difference between 'Christian' and quasi-spiritual.

Thanks for listening...
