Subject: The 'Proud' History Of manly - Part VIII

Season 1981 arrives and manly give Coach Thomson 'the opportunity to broaden his horizons'. After failing to lure 'Iced Vo-Vo' Stanton back from Redcliffe - the Poisoned Chalice is passed to a cabbie who'd picked up Aaaarko after a long lunch. Ray Ritchie was a former International who'd played in the '57 World Cup. He was enthusiastic, devoted to the Club and knew the Sydney competition well... clearly, then, his days were numbered.

Surprisingly, manly also buy a couple of players in Geoff Gerard and Mark Broadhurst. Surprisingly, both were also Internationals.

In a game against Wests that season, Les Boyd caught up with his old mate Dallas Donnelly. During the course of the game, Boyd tells his mate Dallas that he seems to have a nasty graze on his knee and offers to check it for possible infection. The innocent and not-too-bright Donnelly offers his knee for inspection, whereupon Boyd seizes the opportunity to pull a penalty (a connivance never displayed by him prior to 1980). Sensing the subterfuge a little too late, Dallas gives his mate a 'better luck next time' pat on the head. Donnelly is given a 'better luck next time' fourteen-week suspension after being sent off by Referee Hartley.

Also during that season, Parra played their last ever game at Cumberland Oval. The result was a 20-all draw with manly. Parra fans make a mental note to later sterilise the visitor's sheds by heating them up.

A manly side brimming with purloined talent manage to improve on their 1980 season's record... by one. They win 12 out of 22 games. They even make the Semis!

Mark Broadhurst - a recognised 'hard-man' who has spent most of the season in reserves - is in manly's starting line-up for their Semi encounter with Newtown. The Newtown side, coached by an astute Warren Ryan, are determined not to become thug-fodder. Broadhurst is marked by Newtown's Steve Bowden and Newtown win their way through to that year's GF by defeating manly 20-15.
