Subject: The 'Proud' History Of manly - Part X

And so, dear Readers, on to 1983:

A Four Corners expose' re. the aquittal of current NSWRL and ARL Chairman, Kevin Humphries, on charges of misappropriation of funds forces his resignation. His pal Aaaarko is appointed ARL Chairman, while John Quayle is appointed General Manager.

In that year's State Of Origin series; manly's Les Boyd attacks Queensland's talented Daryl Brohman smashing his jaw. So savage and sickening was the event that television stations refuse to show it during their early news services. Mums and Dads with kids playing RL look up the 'phone number of their local Soccer club to register their children for the remainder of that year - manly's Boyd gets 12 months and many comment that Wests' Cooper got 15 months for less. Brohman misses out on a Test jumper.

Meanwhile, at Brookvale; Bob Fulton is rumoured to have come good with a mortgage over his home and is appointed manly's Coach. With their overdraft limit seemingly increased - manly buy Internationals Noel Cleal, Kerry Boustead, Ian Schubert and Dave Brown that year.

Overflowing with other team's talent, manly win 22 from 26 starts in Season '83. They capture the Minor Premiership and enter the Semis on fire - a resounding endorsement of chequebook recruiting. They easily account for Parra in the Major Semi and enter the GF as red-hot favourites. Parra also make the GF. Come the big day - Aaaarko and Quayle are there to cheer their sides on.

A well drilled Parra, brimming with homegrown talent, belt manly like a red-headed step-child to triumph 18-6. While watching the end of the game at home, manly's Bank Manager spots the look on Aaaarko's face as he is leaving the Grandstand and promptly takes his 'phone off the hook.

Later, in the manly dressing sheds, St.John Ambulance Officers are kept busy administering the Heimlich Manouvre until well into the next day.

Did someone say "Heart can't be bought"? Did someone say "Chokers"?
