In reply to: Wills 's message, "The 'Proud' History of manly - Parts 2 & 3" on 20:36:08 01/08/02 Tue

(In 1974, the era of Mortimer and 'The Entertainers' is born. Wills attends his first GF. manly aren't present, but Easts are... and that's all I have to say about that).

(A Magic Dragon wears boots which may have been borrowed from a Wombat in the 1975 Grand Final. Naturally enough, the boots are cursed and the Magic Dragon bows out a Tragic Dragon. Now, who was his Australian Fullback understudy? Ohhhh, yeah).

In '76, manly win the GF courstesy of their buying GB International Phil Lowe and the ineptititude of Neville Glover... but mainly through buying Phil Lowe. manly then show their long serving and loyal Captain, Bob Fulton, the door. This complete contempt of, and for, player loyalty is to become a trademark.

(In the Year of Our Lord 1977, Parra and St.George draw the first GF. St.George then belt the tripe out of Parra to win the replay after a motivational 16mm film session involving the '73 GF. My contempt for Rod Reddy and, by association, St.George had commenced a couple of years earlier).

In 1978 - having looted Norths of John Gray - manly's '73 lesson that thuggery pays is never more obvious than when they meet with Wests for an exhibition game in Melbourne that year. The manly-inspired brawl which ensues is a heavy set-back to the cause of RL in Victoria... but it gives Roy Masters an idea.

This brilliant tactic is trotted out by manly often during the course of season '78 and provides them a Semi-Final draw with Parra. In the replay, Price is sent of by... who was it...? Oh, yeah - Greg Hartley. Price is later exonerated. Now, what else happened in that match? That's right - a game winning try was scored on the 7th tackle. "But Wills!" you cry "Who won!?". Well, dear readers, it wasn't Parra.

By way of a Preliminary Final win over Minor Premiers Wests, during which a seemingly fair try to Wests' O'Grady is disallowed by the Referee (guess who?), manly reach the '78 GF.

Despite what appears an offside try to Mooney (the Referee springing up from a forward-roll to award the points), manly can only manage a draw with opponents Cronulla. In the replay, manly win, but the cloud of controversy over the performance that season of a certain Referee hangs dark and heavy. Greg Hartley is appointed to accompany that year's Kangaroo Tour for his efforts that season. My research to determine who was heading the ARL at that time continues.
