***Special Event Sat 5/18! NEWF ROMP n' SWIM in conjunction with Bark in the Park (dog fair) Pasadena, MD see below***
Sat 5/4 9 am -? , ALEXANDRIA, VA: Doggie Derby/ Romp For The Roses, Animal Welfare League of Alexandria http://alexandriaanimals.org/~awla/special_events.cfm or call (703) 838-4775 ext 317 which I strongly recommend as the web site is curiously bereft of information. Held at Ben Brenman Park, 5000 Duke St. Alexandria has a vigorous and quirky dog contingent and this event reflects that. Many unusual dog games-julep slurp (ice cream eating contest), puppy polo, romp for the roses etc, a Parade of Hats with numerous categories, vendors, displays, and more. Free parking, $20 pre-reg, $25 on-site, spectators free. We're going to this one.
Sun 5/5 11 am-2pm, REISTERSTOWN, MD: Adoptathon/Picnic/Blessing of Animals/Rescue Groups-The Humane Society of Baltimore Co hosts this one. They don't say so on their website http://www.hsbcanimals.org/events.htm but I'm sure they'll have some other stuff, too. Warning: If bran muffins and veggie burgers don't do it for you don't count on the picnic for sustenance.
Sun 5/5 1-3 pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: Humane Sunday Celebration, Anne Arundel SPCA alumni reunion, but all are invited for fun activities http://aacspca.org/calendar/. I went to one of these several years ago and had the joy of seeing an English Bulldog win the dog/celebrity look-a-like for his striking resemblence to Roseanne.
Th 5/10-Sun 5/12 SPRINGFIELD/FAIRFAX, VA: Dog Scouts of America Mini Camp-this sounded intriguing, albeit costly. Try figuring out the details at http://dogscouttroop.com/111/ and http://dogscouts.com if you're interested. Good luck.
Sat 5/11 830 am -1230 pm, ARLINGTON, VA: Walk for the Animals of the Animal Welfare League of Arlington http://www.awla.org/wallk02.htm. There's got to be more to it than the website admits.
Sat 5/11 11am-3pm, GREENBELT, MD: Pet Expo at Greenbelt Community Center, 15 Crescent RD Greenbelt MD. Rescue groups, pet-related service providers, demonstrations(agility, flyball, canine musical training), humane trainers, certified acupuncturist, animal psychic and more! Booths, vendors, freebies etc. As usual, you don't actually have to register and walk; you can just wander around and enjoy the festivities. The bonus is the Dog Beach and fully fenced Dog Park also located at the Quiet Waters Park site. Anne Arundel Co. SPCA http://www.aacspca.org/walk/.
