Subject: Annapolis/Balto/DC Area Dog Events Oct '03

October is the month of the most glorious dog holiday of the year, Howl-o-ween. Start thinking about a costume if you haven't done so already. Along with the events listed here, keep in mind that many local pet stores also have costume contests, frequently with very little competition. Gomez once won a $25 gift card merely by wearing a saddle and bandanna.

Sat 10/4 ALEXANDRIA, VA: The Canine Freestyle (dancing) Federation's website says they're having a show at the Lee District Recreation Center. Irritatingly, that's about all it says. I guess you have to email dmdoxies@rap.midco.net if you want to find out more.

Sat 10/18 5- 7pm FREDERICK, MD: Howl 'n' Wine Festival at Carroll Creek Promenade features samples from local caterers & vineyards plus a costume contest for you and your dog, all to benefit the Frederick Co. Humane Society http://www.fchs.org/howl.htm .

Sat 10/18 7pm- 11pm, GAITHERSBURG, MD: Dances With Dogs put on by the Montgomery Co Humane Society http://www.danceswithdogs.net/ at the Gaithersburg Washingtonian Marriott. Dancing, dining (a tasty-sounding menu), auctions, animal caricaturist, doggie fashion show, and more-all for only $100. Dress is cocktail attire (whatever that means) for people; dogs can wear whatever they like.
Sun 10/19 11am- 2pm, REISTERSTOWN, MD: Paws on Parade to benefit the Humane Society of Balto Co. http://www.hsbcanimals.org/10-19-03_pawsparade.asp .Located on 365 acres of beautiful rolling hillsides and fields, an agility course is available to try out, vendor alley, displays, and (shudder) vegetarian food. Sun 10/19 12n- 3pm WASHINGTON, DC: The Washington Animal Rescue League http://www.warl.org/events/?PHPSESSID=322ca03aefd8f6b6ee399e318ffa0c53 is having their annual PawFest. Open house and tours of the shelter and medical center, along with children’s activities, dog training demonstrations, and great food.

Tu 10/21 6pm- 8pm, NATIONWIDE: Petsmart is having a Howl-o-ween Yappy Hour featuring three separate costume contests at 630, 7 & 730 pm and a free picture and frame with purchase of $20. Call to make sure your local Petsmart is participating before you show up since sometimes a rogue location will decide to be a party pooper. The ones in Annapolis and Pasadena (Mountain Rd) are having it for sure, but I'm darned if I'm calling all of them. Why they don't do a better job publicizing these events I don't know.

Fri 10/24 & Sat 10/25, LEESBURG, VA: The Middleburg Kennel Club http://www.middleburgkc.com/mkcshows.html hosts its annual fall dog show at Oatlands Plantation. Sat boasts a Colonial Newfoundland Club supported entry and there's no obedience on Fri. There may be very little obedience on Sat, too, if enough Newfs like Gomez are entered.

Sat 10/25 930am POTOMAC, MD: Montgomery Co SPCA http://www.mcspca.org/dogwalk/default.asp is holding their Dog Walk and Pet Fair (contests, food, auctions etc) in conjunction with Potomac Day. You can tell this is taking place in a high-rent district since they want you to fork out a hefty $30.

Sat 10/25 10am- 4pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: Quiet Waters Park Howl-O-Ween Barkin' Bash http://quietwatersdogpark.org/events/bash.html has contests galore, music, food, displays, demos and more. Plus it takes place by the Dog Park and near the Dog Beach. We're going to this one.

Sat 10/25 1-4pm, LAUREL, MD: Roxie's Fund http://wwwroxiesfund.org/events.htm hosts a Halloween party at JDS Family Doggie Day Care, 13701 Virginia Manor Rd,
Laurel, MD 20902, featuring doggie trick or treat, photos, games, best
costume contest. Be advised that you may have to park a quarter mile or so away and negotiate a narrow two lane road afflicted with speeding cars to get to the site.

Sat 10/25 130- 330 pm, BALTIMORE, MD: 4th Annual Howl-A-Ween Dog Festival in Canton at The Can Company on Boston St. Dine al fresco with your dog, vendors, info, displays, entertainment. This is the cleverest and most competitive fancy dress dog costume contest I've ever seen. Among other astonishing sights was a pack of mutts dressed like a crab feast, complete with a can of Old Bay and a paper towel roll. Not much on the website http://www.cantoncommunity.org/welcome/calendar/calendar.html (scroll down to date) and I'm wondering if the given times are correct since it lasted much longer and started earlier last year.

Sat 10/25 3pm, LAKE ACCOTINK, VA: Boneyard hunt for dogs at Lake Accotink http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/parks/accotink/events.htm scroll down to date. Short walk, hidden treats, costume contest, doggy talent show, more.

I've been assured by a committee member that you can bring your dog to this.

Sun 11/2 12n- 3pm, ELLICOTT CITY/COLUMBIA MD: Stroll n' Roll- walk (and more) around Centennial Park to benefit Fidos For Freedom http://www.fidosforfreedom.org/ which provides therapy assistance dogs to those who need them. They're asking for a reasonable $10 registration fee which includes a sports water bottle.

Sun 11/2 1- 5pm, CROWNSVILLE, MD: The Canine Fitness Center is having a 4 hour first aid/CPR class, $49 in advance. The instructor is Gus Becce, a nurse and former Montgomery Co. EMT who's been teaching both human & pet classes for 12 years. In 1998 he was cited for the resuscitation of a dog saved from a house fire in Silver Spring. More info will be on website http://caninefitnesscenter.com/ or call 410-923-7946.
