Was coaching at Westmar, in the summer of 1987, just before the football season was to start and Coach Randy Schmailzl called me in to his office. He handed me a letter from some guy in Phoenix, Arizopna. The letter was asking for a football helmet to be mailed to him for some collection that he had at his bar. For some reason this struck a chord with Coach Schmailzl and he told me to get a helmet and send it out. I responded with the fact that we are nearly broke as a College, why would we do that.... Typical reply - just get it done!!

That summer, we had Scott Dicks and B.T. Kracl working to get equipment ready to go - out of one of the buildings that was closed....no A/C, and probably condemmed. Scott and B.T. grabbed one of the really old helmets - put a fresh coat of silver paint on it and brought it to the office. Our "W" helmet decals had not arrived yet - so we asked Randy what to do. He tossed us a square mailing label out of his desk drawer and said "just stick that on there and get it sent". Since it was square and the helmet was rounded - it did not look real pretty, but we did as dirercted. My memory is that there was no facemask or chinstrap - but I could be wrong.

Anyway - I moved to Phoenix in 1989, and hunted down the bar and the helmet. The bar owner was a graduate of University of South Dakota (my alma mater), and a huge Nebraska football fan. He had over 500 helmets mounted in his bar - and the Westmar helmet was one.

Kind of forgot about it as I moved to L.A., then Las Vegas, and now am back in Phoenix. Randy's son Andy works for me and we were talking about all of the crazy things that his Dad used to do - and this memory came back to me. The bar is just a couple of miles from my house and near my office - so I stopped by and took some pictures. The helmet has a facemask and chinstrap, the mailing label is still looking pretty goofy - but what a great memory!!

Anyway the restaurant is on 6727 N 47th Ave, Glendale, AZ 85301, United States
If anyone wants to see the place and check out the helmets

Thanks, I think I've seen that one before, and had tried without success to find out if it was actually used by the team. Fortunately the story to which you have linked reads in part:

"Scott and B.T. grabbed one of the really old helmets - put a fresh coat of silver paint on it and brought it to the office. Our "W" helmet decals had not arrived yet - so we asked Randy what to do. He tossed us a square mailing label out of his desk drawer and said "just stick that on there and get it sent"

- which apparently confirms that Westmar did not actually use this design (the one with the rectangular logo).

Westmar is, I think, the most recently discontinued team for which I have not been able to add even a single helmet design to the website. It never ceases to amaze me that a team active as recently as 1997 (less than two years before the 'Helmet Project' website was initiated!) could vanish so thoroughly from the internet.

A few mostly low-quality videos have been uploaded to youtube showing the team in action. In this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-aU3C2frwE

it appears that Westmar is using plain silver helmets in 1987, with a blue/white/blue set of stripes. The facemask color is unclear though, and I cannot tell whether they are gray or blue or a mixture of the two.

People have sent me photographs from the collection at the Arizona restaurant almost since I started the website in 1999. Unfortunately the curation of the collection seems to be quite poor, so I think any information gathered from it should be used cautiously. For example, the helmet labelled "WILMIMGTON" [sic] in this photograph is quite obviously an old Bucknell design; not even the colors are right for Wilmington College.
