So with thirty students needing to read the book about Ancient Egyptian Relaxation Techniques from the library (and they might well not be in any mood to hurry, the further they read) it might mean a 90 week wait before the last student got their turn! They'd really need it by then! What a compelling reason for computers in libraries quite apart from the fact that some research papers are published on the www up to three months before they appear as hard copies. I wonder how the costs balance out between running the computers and buying books and consigning them to the dustbin when they get out of date or damaged? It's a shame that reading from a monitor is much more wearing for the eyes. I taught a student (a political assylum seeker) who learned visual basic (a computer programming language) free from online tutorials at night, while the other students were getting cabbaged in the pub! He's a programmer now!
