This sounds to me like it might be a good job for layers. Maybe it would work by selecting several different areas of the original picture and then saving each one to a different layer. Then you could assemble them and slide them around behind or on top of each other and behind or on top of the introduced second picture ... which would also have to be on a layer of its own... hours of fun!!
