Subject: roto toms

Hello
Getting back into drums and considering a kit of all roto toms (6,8,10,12,14,16,18) except of course the snare and base drum.

Question: How do you compare the sounds of the roto toms to normal acoustic 4 ply toms with bottom heads? I don't really see people using them. Saw Alex Van Halen use them on the "Jump Video" but I dout he used them on the 1984 album, I don't know though.

I know they would be easy to transport! I have used the 6,8,10 before and was pleased and someone said the bigger toms sound even better. Any opinions?

Bass drum question: Do you pad the bass drum or maybe put a dead ringer inside? What does Alex Van Halen or Dean Castronova of journey do?

Thanks
David
