Absolutely. It does need a dormant period.
After the flower is done, prune off the spike and let the leaves do their job, which is feeding the bulb and growing a new flowerbud inside the bulb. I'd wait til the leaves begin to die back and not trim them til then.
I confess to not being sure about the dormant period and treatment at that time. It's my assumption it should be kept on the cool side (not freezing cold), with just enough water to keep the bulb from shriveling. Bring to warmth and increase the water again once you see some green foliage begin to grow.

That's pretty much what I did last year--left it outside till frost became likely. I think I could leave it protected by the wall and it would be OK all winter, I have piggyback plants out there that wintered OK and some kind of succulent thing. My tall cactus also did OK and I think my fuscias are still alive. I think they all like the sun we've been getting lately too.
