Subject: Holyland resident Belfast speak back at student scum

Cash not in short supply for 'poor' students on the razzle

23 December 2003

Belfast telegraph

I SUGGEST that Ben Archibald, NUS-USI Convenor, defends student behaviour in his letter (Writeback, December 15), who asks what evidence there is that students are living the life of Reilly, surveys the scene at the top of Botanic Avenue around nine o'clock at night.

He will see the droves (possibly 500 per night) of poor students heading out to waste their hard-earned money on fast food and alcohol.

If, as Mr Archibald says, more than 50% of students are having to work 14 hours a week to make ends meet, are these revellers just running up massive debts?

Between 1am and 4am these same students return, the worse for drink, some making as much noise as possible and causing as much damage as they can to public property and the environment which long-term residents have no choice but to share with them.

Such behaviour would indicate that these particular students have had little education from their families or schools before attending university and that they gain very little intelligence from the universities about how to share civilisation or communal living.

It is not intelligent to waste good money that is available to those who wish to improve their education or prospects on others who see this as funding for a free pub crawl and who take full advantage, while wrecking the communities into which they are crammed, totally unsupervised, by all those who feed off their money.

This is a growing problem across south Belfast and it is getting worse.

It will not be improved by cramming into universities more people who are not interested in education or intelligence and who destroy the reputation and prospects of those who are.

The universities, pubs and food outlets want quantity. The world deserves quality.

FRIEND OF THE HOLYLAND, Belfast 7.
