Knife gang targets student cars

By Stephen Breen

COPS are hunting for a knife-wielding gang of car thieves, who have been terrorising students at the University of Ulster's Jordanstown campus.

The latest incident happened on Monday, when a terrified student was forced to hand over the keys to her car, after a thug threatened the woman with a large knife.

And police now believe the same gang was responsible for a series of car thefts at Ulster's largest university, last month.

A number of meetings have also been arranged by the university's staff liaison committee, to discuss the issue.

Angry first-year student, Adam McCalden, 18, had his vehicle stolen from the university's car park, last month.

Speaking to Sunday Life, the Newtownabbey man warned other students at Jordanstown to be aware of the gang.

Said the computer student: "I want to know if the cameras were working, because if they were not, then these people could strike again.

"I have already written to the university about this, and students need to be aware about this gang.

"They are carrying knives, and I don't think they would be too worried about attacking someone, because the only thing that matters to them is the car.

"I have asked the authorities if more can be done to protect law-abiding citizens from these thieves, because they are attacking people in broad daylight.

"I am devastated about my car because it was my first one, and I just don't want the same thing happening to someone else."

It is understood cops are also probing the theory that campus security cameras were not working properly, when the gang struck.

The UUJ's director of public affairs, Brendan Kelleher, said new measures were being introduced to address the problem of car crime, at the university.

Mr Kelleher said: "The latest incident in the car park is under investigation, and we are working closely with PSNI.

"Part of the income from car park charges we will be introducing will be directed to CCTV, and an increased security presence at each of our campuses, and this will obviously serve as a deterrent to car crime.

"But, as the largest university on the island of Ireland, we cannot guarantee security at each of our many car parks.

"However, we are very conscious of the effect on staff, students and visitors of car crime and we are committed to doing anything we can to address this problem".

A PSNI spokesman appealed to anyone with information on the gang to come forward.
