22 February 2005
A senior police officer today branded a double paramilitary-style shooting carried out in the Rathfern area of Newtownabbey as "brutal and despicable."

Two men in their 20's were dragged down an alley in the Altnacreeve Park area of Rathfern early yesterday evening. Both victims were shot in the leg and while one received a wound to his right calf, the other man was shot in his left calf.

Following the shooting, both men were taken to hospital and treated for the injuries.

Condemning last night's shooting, Superintendent Nigel Ritchie - district commander for the Newtownabbey area - urged anyone with information to come forward.

He said: "These are brutal and despicable crimes which result in serious physical injuries. These acts are not consistent with human rights, criminal justice or the ethos of innocent until proven guilty.

Supt Ritchie also called on members of the public with information on such acts to come forward.
