It seemed that was the question on everybody’s lips last week as news that longtime Dracut High School baseball coach and Vice Principal Hank Golec was the target of an investigation by school officials.
Golec is suspected of secretly taping head football coach Jeff Moore holding practices over the summer in violation of MIAA rules. He is also suspected of damaging video security equipment worth tens of thousands of dollars.
But why?
Observers say it stems back several years to when Pat Murphy replaced Golec as an assistant, bringing Moore in for the job.
In 2008, when Murphy left Dracut to coach St. Anselm College in New Hampshire, Moore got the head coaching job, leading the Middies to the Super Bowl in his first year.
Golec, meanwhile, took a gig as a line coach at Greater Lowell Technical High School.
But the acrimony goes back almost a decade when Golec, a 34-year employee of the district, was passed over by then Superintendent Elaine Espindle for the job of athletic director. The job ultimately went to Tim Woods, a former School Committee member who voted to hire Espindle.
