If you don't like the way that Windows XP groups similar icons together into a single entry on the taskbar (a group of Windows applications for example), you can restore the default taskbar behaviour of previous versions of Windows easily.
Right click on an empty area of the taskbar or start button and click “Properties”. Choose the “Taskbar” tab and uncheck the “Group Similar Taskbar Buttons” option. Now you will have individual entries.

If you find that the Taskbar becomes too cluttered this way, you can simply change the number of applications to group in the Registry.
Open Regedit and navigate to:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced] and double click the “TaskbarSizeMove” subkey in the right column.
Under “Base”, place a tic in “Decimal” and enter the number of entries to group under “Value Data”.
