"First of all, I wouldn't have forgotten my equipment. A bow would suitably eliminate the target and his guards, and a sword or a dagger or two would be handy in case any of them surivived. However, assuming my equipment was broken or tragically left behind, I would also use rocks, as you have so nicely done, and perhaps a thick branch or two.

"I would not seek to disarm as much as cripple--and startling the horses may lead to more trouble than it would be worth should everyone's mount flee, and should the target not fall off or be otherwise left behind.

"One good-sized rock would be sent, well-aimed, to disable the target. If it knocks him out, as intended, he may slump, fall from his horse, or otherwise make a disturbance. Any reasonable guard would realize that something was wrong, and while some would assume immediately that there were enemies present that were making an attempt on their employer's life, I would have moved on and began systematically either disabling or drawing off the guards with a strategy much like yours. Spook the equine, disarm, generate unconsiousness with flung rocks--whatever would get them out of the way.

"Of course, by then I would be drawing closer to the target, to blugeon him with something. A thick branch, perhaps, which may double as a weapon against his guards and their equines, and hold them off long enough to make the kill. Of course, eliminating the guards is more or less unnecessary at this current time unless your instructions specifically mentioned the guards, and you could charge extra for their extermination. You could always hunt them down afterwards, for a fee, kill them if they come after you--this time, with you preferably wielding weaponry--or perhaps bribe them with any valuables the corpse of their employer may possess.

"Likewise, if you had felt like being clever and thought ahead, perhaps you could have bribed the guards beforehand? Killed one, maybe, and took their place, only to make the kill at an opportune moment? Poisioned the man before the trip, so as not to get involved in dealing with his guards?"

The emerald-eyed master of assassins paused, smiling faintly.

"Proper planning is key. Improvisation must also be thought through with the utmost care, so as to escape any reasonable encounter with your life.

"And your life should be valued above that of your target--if you mess up the first time, he--or she--will expect another try. It is best to be accurate the first time, so as not to require another try... One that may be more difficult than the first.

"Also, should you decide that your original plan be going wrong, it would probably be best to abort the effort and try something new, rather than to muddle through and make a mess of things."
