Subject: Trees & GV's

Back in to feed the dogs (2 GSD's), and just remembered a question I have, that you might be able to address. I've read recently that among other suitable tree limbs for SFS enclosures, hemlock is acceptable. I have always thought hemlock poisonous, and it is never allowed near my horses. Of course, horses are not SFS's, - although my late husband, a horseman all his life, and from a long line of horsemen, always said horses were the world's largest rodents! (This because of their inclination to chew wood...). Still, I recall reading that the berries of the hemlock are poisonous, and the only creatures that can eat them are birds, because the poison is in the seed, and the bird eats the pulpy fruit, without damaging the seed, which simply passes through the bird. I would think that a gnawing animal like a squirrel would be in some danger, with hemlock. Indeed, I thought it was a brew made from hemlock that was used to execute Socrates, when other scholars felt threatened by his knowledge, and found him guilty of heresy. Or course, that may have been a brew from the hemlock plant, not the hemlock tree, but still, it is a concern. Have you any knowledge on this subject?
