Subject: Trees & GV's - a wonderful combination...

I've just found what might be a very handy resource for those of us who have enough room in our squirrel habitats to provide playground apparatus, in the form of tree limbs, for our buddies. While in the wild, there is not likely any problem for sciuridae and toxicity in trees, in an enclosed environment, often animals will chew upon whatever is available. Some trees have poisonous properties. Sometimes, it is not the entire tree, but just a specific part of the tree (as with apples - the pip contains cyanide, and the wild cherry - the leaves and bark are dangerous). While perusing the information Google provided with a search under boxelder, I chanced upon Virginia Tech's "Ask Dr. Dendro", a sort of e-dvice column. I have submitted an inquiry as to the toxicity of this tree, in relation to squirrels. I will let you know what response I get! (I'll give them a few extra days, what with this being the holiday weekend...) In the mean time, this is the site eddress:
