Subject: question about claws

We rescued a baby flyer in March. He has thrived in our care. He has a tall cage with branches to climb. He loves sweet potatoes, fruit and nuts.
We are now concerned because he seems to have stopped climbing. We first thought that something was wrong with him neurologically because he just seemed to be off balance.
Now we are realizing that he seems to be getting his claws caught on our clothes, the curtains, etc..
Is it possible that his claws are too long and need clipping? I'm afraid to do this. Does anybody know what might be wrong or what we can do to fix it?
We are new to this flying squirrel ownership. Any advise would be helpful.
