Actually, this is not unusual at all. Flyers come down to the ground much more often than is commonly thought. Reasons - to forage, to cache food, to dig for false truffles attached to the roots of trees (the northern flying squirrel's favourite food).

My son is radio-tracking northern flyers in the Sheep River Mountains of Alberta and this winter he has found several UNDERGROUND aggregates. These subterranean groupings have been recorded previously in peer-reviewed papers by others studying the ecology of northern flying squirrels via radio-collars during winter months. The underground homes would serve to better regulate warmth than but the biggest old-growth snags.

But you won't likely find a flyer far from a tree trunk. In communications with a grad student who is conducting radio-collar-based studies in the US, she has found that flyers presented with no gliding option, WILL NOT cross a simple two-lane road on foot.
