I'm sorry I didn't see this thread earlier-our squirrel did the same thing at about 1 1/2 years of age-his tail was the same pretty fawn color as the rest of him, then his tail went bald up the middle, and started growing in black-first at the tip of the tail, which made us think it was dead! We brought him to the vet (who'd never seen a flyer) and she recommended-horror of horrors-amputating his tail! We about ran out of there. Sure enough, now the tip of his tail molts out yearly and is black, and there is a darker strip up the middle of the tail. I'm glad your Icarus was just being normal-bald flyer tails do look funny, and can be scary if you think somethings wrong.
