ADL Praises NAACP Leader for Swift Condemnation of Local Official's

ew York, NY, August 9, 2000 � The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today praised the leader of the NAACP for his "swift and unconditional" condemnation of a local official in Texas for his anti-Semitic remarks during a radio talk show.
Kweisi Mfume, President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, has characterized the remarks of Lee Alcorn, the Dallas NAACP President, as "repulsive, anti-Semitic, anti-NAACP and anti-American."

"It is responses like Kweisi Mfume�s that say to the African-American community and indeed all of America that anti-Semitism is unacceptable," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "We commend the NAACP for taking a strong and eloquent stand and speaking out forcefully and unconditionally about Mr. Alcorn�s horrendous anti-Semitic statements."

During his appearance on a radio talk show in Dallas, Mr. Alcorn was asked to comment on the choice of Sen. Joseph Lieberman as the Democratic vice presidential candidate. Mr. Alcorn responded, in part: "I think we need to be very suspicious of any kind of partnerships between the Jews at that kind of level because we know that their interest primarily has to do with money and these kinds of things."

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
