Subject: wow cat food is a huge debate
In reply to: Nicki 's message, "RobRoy - Sugar Glider Question" on 22:11:18 11/20/01 Tue

my friends website http://www.sugar-gliders.com

When I got my first glider it was from a local pet shop. The guy at the pet shop told me to feed them cat food penuts and some fruit. He didnt have a clue. Cat food is very high in protein, but also very high in fat. Peanuts are also high in fat. If you feed sugar gliders cat foodthey get fat and get eye problems and other health problems. My vet told me that a little cat food in the diet is ok, but to use it sparingly. I myself never give it to them. I feed mine leadbeaters mix and fresh fruit every night. I also give them crickets all the time for protein.

Here is a site to get the BML recipe. http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/leadbeat.html

It is also good to give them fresh meat in the form of non seasoned boiled turky or chicken. I have heard of people giving them pinky mice (babies you can buy at most reptile pet stores) and day old chickens still alive. From what I understand people first did this by accident. When SG were still new to the pet trade they would put them in aviaries with their birds. And the next day wouldent have any more birds. I don't know if you have a glider yet, but have you ever seen them go into hunt mode? Its kinda cut how a inocent face gets when they see a mouse of hamster. Next time you are at a pet store pick up a fake mouse, the real fur kind. wave it in front of your gliders face and watch him go into hunt mode.

I have also heard of people buying tose frozen condensed fruits in the cans and giving them to their gliders. What you do is buy like 5 dif kinds and give them just a little every night and every night a differant kind. You can also get whats called glideraid its a water additive.

Hope I have been helpfull,
RobRoy
