Subject: Dyslexia and being a foreigner

I've recently started the course to help my son (age 14)who has been assessed with dyslexia at the age of 11. It happened so late because we moved to UK from Poland when he was 7, and at school teachers were thinking he couldn't cope because he was a foreigner. Before that time, he had been going through the really bad time as being extremely intelligent he could not achieve good grades and had difficulties with literacy, numeracy, organizing and emotions. Not knowing the problem, teachers labelled him ‘lazy’, ‘dumb’, ‘not trying enough’, ‘trouble maker’ etc. Family and friends could not understand the problem, as well. I remember crying often and thinking ‘what is going on’?, ‘why my son cannot manage in life’?, ‘why easy things are becoming extremely difficult for him’? It's much easier now, when we know the 'problem' much better. I am glad but sometimes think, that's pity we didn't know earlier... It could save us so many unpleasant moments...
