Dear Bill,
I don't want to "rain on your parade", but importing a 1982 928 into the US would be very difficult and expensive. If the car were 25 years or more it would be easier, but you would still have considerable expenses. You see, the DOT and NHTSA have a mountain of regulations you must meet in order for the car to be imported. Their web site is http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/ . Your car is on the list of eligible vehicles (look under eligibilty list on the home page), which means it has been imported and modified to meet US standards before. The expense occurs when you need to get a registered importer to certify and modify the car. To clear customs you are required to us a RI and ICI. I was looking at importing a 99 Mercedes 280 V-Class (Van) from Germany. After researching the cost it didn't make any sense to do so. I was quoted prices from $8,500 to $10,000 from the list provided on the above web site. Unless it is an extremely expensive or rare car, it probably won't pay to import it.
