Subject: Cooling Fans won't go off

Need help in diagnosing a fault in my 88 928S4 cooling system. The twin thermostatic fans go on and stay on at full tilt as soon as the key turns to the accessory position (not started). I have replaced the sensor in the intake manifold, for no joy. I hate to buy a (new) control unit for $325 (non-returnable) unless I know that is the fault for sure. Any ideas?
