Subject: What to do with the Argos

There's no question that it's an embarrassment to the CFL to have the team in its largest market floundering the way the Argos are. This organization needs some major changes, and I must question whether it's going to happen under Sherwood Schwarz' ownership.

Schwarz' latest move is to bring in Garth Drabinsky as a consultant. For those of you who don't know, Drabinsky is a Toronto millionaire who made his fortune in entertainment. Yes, sports are another facet of show business, which Drabinsky should know how to sell. But consider that his latest venture, Livent, rode a Showboat down the river in dramatic fashion, leaving Drabinsky embroiled in civil law suits, and criminal fraud charges in the U.S. for which a warrant is still outstanding. Remind anyone of Bruce McNall?

The CFL Board of Governors, meanwhile, seem so relieved that Schwarz has some semblance of a business plan (and that they won't abandon Skydome for Lamport Stadium) that they're willing to let this happen.

Schwarz has had several offers to buy the team, one including Sig Gutsche as a minority partner. Gutsche brought the Stampeders back from the brink, surely he could do the same with the Argos. But Schwarz stubbornly holds on to control of the dying Toronto franchise.

If Schwarz insists on owning the team, he at least needs to take his hands off, and hire someone with experience to run the organization. The CFL cannot afford to lose the Argos now, which is exactly what will happen if they continue on the present course.
