Ok, ok I got an early start on the bubbly stuff....
Promised, sorta, to relate a tale or two, so here goes a short one:

Scene - several USN ships in convoy, heading home to Norfolk. Two of the ships are of the same type and have similiar hull numbers (the big numbers on the front end). One of the ships is at the front of the convoy, the other is bringing up the rear. Just for the sake of the story, we will call the other ship 1123, and my ship (the one at the rear) is 1133. It is a calm, dark night prior to arriving at Newport ... someone gets the idea of changing the 1133 to 1123 just for gits and shiggles, lowers himself over the side and does just that. He also won at chess that night. Due to the configuration of the ship, the numbers cannot be seen from onboard. Officials coming out to meet the ship, and all radio commo from the shore is via this hull number ... needless to say, there was some slight confusion that morning....they kept trying to find the 1133 and never could. Of course, they kept trying to contact the 1123 which was clearly right in front of them, but that ship wouldn't answer. The 'real' 1123 had already entered port and tied up, shut down and in the process of going home. The fact that a '1123' had already been logged in as entering port also caused some consternation ashore.

Long periods at sea do something to the human mind....

Happy New Year!
