Subject: After a stormy morning hunt....

that had tornados watches and warnings out for our hunting area, we stuck it out to hunt in the afternoon. Before daylight, we drove to deercamp and watched flashes of distant lightning streak across the horizon. It was coming a gooden further north of our destination. We pulled into camp, finished dressing and capped our gear and bodies off with rainproof ponchos. I told Frank that the last report on the weather channel had this area looking like it would miss the most of the worse storms. We were hoping for a couple hours hunt before the bad stuff hit. Yeah right!

Thirty minutes after sunup, with the clouds behind some deathly dark clouds and the wind whipping the tops of the trees like they were feathers, we continued to hunt. The lightning never got close, those clouds went around. If that first flash had come anywhere near, I would have hoofed it back to the pickup. But instead, I settled down under a massive green cedar. I was hoping for some protection from the blowing rain, but alas since I was in a cow woodslot, the lower limbs had been rubbed off and the lower proctective branches were bare. I suddenly hear this rumble and the wind dies as if cut off by a light switch. I turn in the direction of the rumble and see the torrid rain coming down. It was crossing the bottomland and headed for us. I radioed Frank to get ready for the shower that was about to hit. I picked up my stool and went to the back side of the cedar tree trunk hoping for some extra blockage from the driving downpour. It hit. I pulled the poncho tighter about me and my rifle. My knees got soaked and the wrists of my shirt which stuck out from under the sleeves of the raingear. But for the most part, I stayed fairly dry.

An hour later, it had slowed down to a steady drizzle. I figured the deer might start to move. But Frank was soaked and ready to go. We headed out, went to the local store and ordered up a hot breakfast at 9:30. By 10:30, the sun was peeking out. By 2, the wind was howling, but the sky was only speckled with fast flying dark clouds. We went back to our stands. The wind was awful. I felt the huge oak my stand was on, rock and roll several times during the afternoon, but I hung in there.

By 4:30 I had a large doe on the ground and had begun the fielddressing job. I sure am glad I convienced Frank to stay at camp, wet socks and all. I sure can't kill a deer sacked out on the sofa watching reruns of "I love Lucy".

:)
