Vaan maissi kun on syntynyt luonnossa kahden (tai useamman) heinälajin risteytyessä, kuten monet muutkin viljakasvit. Jalostus ei muuta kasvin lajia tai kromosomistoa mihinkään; siis viljelty maissi risteytyy villimaissin kanssa. Ja villimaissia kasvaa edelleen mm. Meksikossa.
