I was born in '61. When I was a kid, nothing was open (neither gas stations nor groceries). Video stores didn't exist yet. :)

Somewhere around 1980, it started to change, with groceries being open until noon...then two...then four.

I absolutely don't think the government (fed, state or local) should mandate shuttered stores, especially when the internet is open 24/7. But, it takes social shaming, and more so, people actively avoiding the stores that open, in order to get them to realize that it's a bad business decision.
