At every show I attend (which is most of them) one fan or another manages to chant, yell, or otherwise plead for the band to play Trapeze. And everytime they do, I'm standing there, pleading under my breath that by the grace of God the band isn't hearing them.

I'm not alone.

Candid DOES bring out the old favorites that can be compared to those that you mention from Dave Matthews (gag)—Bum's Watch, Iceberg, Nicotine, God Bless Hysteria, etc. Do they play the more tired material that betrays the youth with which it was written? No. And that's a good thing.

I've been following Candid pretty closely for a year and a half now—not nearly as long as some of you, but what really sold me on thier sound wasn't the bootleg recording of the Soma Project that a friend of mine played for me—it was their live shows. I was into it by end of the first song, and hooked by the Ani interlude to Bum's Watch. Since then, I catch every show that I can, photograph whatever I can, follow them out of state as often as schedules allow, and spread news of them to whoever will listen.

It isn't the dancing or the ingenious covers (though any band that covers Wilco or Blind Melon is inherrently cooler and smarter than anyone else) that keep me coming back for more. It's the music itself—the unbridled emotion, lyrics that are smarter, more ingenious and brilliant than most of anything that I hear otherwise, and the passion with which every song is delivered. I've never been actually disappointed, nor have the friends that I've brought over the year—every single one of them has come back for more.

In comparison to the past two albums especially, the Soma Project lacks what I, and so many other Candid fans have come to love about the band—originality and a sense of lyrical intelligence. I say this not to be critical, but it was an album put out by eigthteen year olds-- eighteen year olds better than most of their peers but eighteen year olds nonetheless. At times, in comparison, it comes off like its trying too hard—whereas the creativity and honesty of the newer material is real, natural, and uncomparable. I can only hope that we all have grown up as much since high school and have as much to show for it as these guys. If we were only all so lucky.

The change is rad. Do your thing, guys. I'll be there listening. And I won't be alone then either.
