Subject: How to keep the Slayer spirit alive

Dear Friends,

I have just finished Chosen, the final episode of Buffy. I live in Istanbul, Turkey and I spend about 50 USD (56K connection!) downloading each episode as soon as they are aired in the US, but alas, this too has come to an end. I’m not going to whine about it: It has come to an end and I’m not surprised. I’m more surprised at the fact that Buffy has managed to be on the air for seven seasons (eleven if you count Angel). Both series are way too radical to be owned by an US national network, and finally the networks have realized this too: See the fate of Firefly, practically stillborn, although at least as promising as Buffy.
The question is: What are we going to do about it? Whine and complain and start lame and hopeless campaigns? Or tell Joss (or anybody else like him –I’m sure there are people like him out there although not as lucky) he doesn’t need network backing to keep up the good work? We can be the network for him.
Here is the plan: We, the Buffy, Angel and potential Firefly fans, can be counted in tens, if not hundreds of thousands. We can start a fundraising campaign to back Mutant Enemy (or a new production company if they are willing to establish one), to allow Joss & Co. to work freely, do whatever they want to do without worrying about the networks. We can do this not by simple donations (always a problematic and feeble method), but try to find new ways: e.g., can we buy shares in Mutant Enemy? Are Mutant Enemy people willing to establish a shareholding sister company to allow us to share? Any other ideas, anybody? Let’s start a BIG campaign, not only for Buffy but in order to make things like Buffy possible, and for now Joss seems to be the only person to realize this (Help us Joss Whedon, you’re our only hope!) Once the work is done, the finished product can find its way into the international market, if not always on TV, as DVD series.
Let’s not let the networks dictate to us what we can and cannot see.
Let’s give Joss a chance without fetters.
Because we are the real network.
And: “What can’t we do if we’re together?
What’s in this world that we can’t weather?”
OK, I’m going in. Any volunteers?

Bülent Somay
