Not enough people do press releases. If you are inviting the public, it justifies a press release. Even businesses trying to drum up new business can do a press release and hopefully get some free exposure.

Who: Everyone who is inviting the public to attend should do press releases for each individual event.

Why: All media outlets (newspaper, radio & TV) have space for Public Service Announcements and most have events calendars or public message sections. Media Outlets rely on information submitted to them to fill these areas. Very few will take the annitative to search for events. the more popular the media source the more press releases they get and less time to go searching. It is imperative you do a press release for each individual event.

What: a press release is a short discription of your event. Give the facts. Who, what, where, when & always give times, restrictions, costs, and most importantly contact information for more info. phone numbers, email web pages, make it short and sweet but be thorough.

When: As soon as your event is confirmed it is time for a press release. Got a new service that is available to the public? do a press release for it. Playing a show at any number of venues in town? then do a press release for it!
doing a new CD? do a press release for it!!! every show should have its own seperate press release. big events can justify multiple press releases.

Where: News Papers, Radio Stations, TV Stations and web sites (Lots of chat boards to get your info out to).
know your markets; if its business send it to the business trade mags and the business sections of the daily Newspapers or radio shows. If it's music or entertainment you have for printed word in Anchorage:
AK This Month
ADN
The UAA Northern Light
The Anchorage Chronicle
The Anchorage Press

Check what radio station would best fit you format and see if there is a events calendar you can get the info to.

Look regionally. If your in the Peninsula you have
AK This Month
The Peninsula Clarion
The Homer News
The Homer Tribune
The Seward Log
+ a few others

The Mat-Su Valley
AK This Month
The Frontiersman
Talkeetna Goodtimes
+++

Fairbanks
AK This Month
The Daily Miner
+++

TV is kinda hard but all have space for public interest stories, it all depends on how you project your event. get creative, you may get attention.

How: Fax in your press release, email in your press release, do it twice, if they have a phone in service (Most dont) then call it in. Be sure not to bother people who arent there to take info about info. I personally like to do press releases every monday until the event, being sure to ad or announce new info every time. Make your event look like the biggest event in the world. spice it up, be positive. You are the source of info for this event, give them the facts, make them want to not only ad your event to celanders but be a story. Act big be big.

AKTM always offers free promotion consulting to all event planners. We will be offering more info like this via this chat board and in new sections of the hard copy coming soon. Please leave us your comments or additions to this info.
