I made a quick check of my weapons to make sure everything was ready. I took a deep breath and made my way towards the old church. It seemed as though the whole world was ignorant of the impending conflict that I was about to participate in. It was a sunny warm day, and if you were quiet you could hear a bird singing in the distance. Of course I had to be quiet as I slipped into the backdoor. The place had been renovated, but it still wasn’t complete. Construction equipment, materials, and cat walks were all over. I could hear the conversation of the people in the church, so I slowly climbed up onto one of the catwalks that led into their room.
The place was pretty dark so I had no problem getting to a good vantage point above their heads. There he was, my bounty. The fool was sitting right in the middle of the place arguing over prices of his ill gotten goods. This man was not only selling off humanity’s history, but also defacing the reputation of a noble organization. I can’t say I felt bad when I took out the concussion grenade.
The explosion was deafening. I could see the unconscious body of Cooley and the guy I figured to be the buyer laying against the wall.
Before I knew it the place opened up in gun fire. I dodged behind one of the pillars rising up into the ceiling and got my bearings. Two guys down, three more to go.
Submachine gun fire tore up the stone pillar sending dust, and broken stone everywhere. I swung around and answered in turn tearing the goon’s chest apart with a three round burst. Two to go.
I tossed another grenade around the pillar to discourage further gun fire. I braced myself for the explosion so I could run for different cover. Unfortunately my grenade seemed to bounce back towards the catwalk I was on. The concussion grenade went off, and the whole catwalk folded like a cheap wallet, made of wood and steel.
The dust cleared and my ankle hurt like hell. The whole place was quiet, and I didn’t intend on changing that. I must have sat like that for about five minutes waiting for them to make the first move. I realized that the cat walk had collapsed in front of the back entrance and only the front doors were accessible. This was not turning out to be a good day.
