Subject: The Regine Velasquez Story ( Part I )

HER STORY

Regine Velasquez's 'Cinderella-like success story has told many times
and, in fact, has now become legendry. However, one can't get enough
of how she came to be and for those young hopefuls who want to be
like her, it should be told time and again to serve as an
inspiration.

Regina Encarnacion Ansong Velasquez - is the real name of
what we all know now as Regine Velasquez. She was born on April 22,
1970 in Manila but her family moved to Hinundayan, Leyte when she was
very young (they later on settled in Balagtas, Bulacan). In
Hinundayan, the young Regine was trained by her father, Mang Gerry,
in the sea by submerging her into the water up to her neck to
strengthen her voice - a style adapted by many young singers, like
Sarah Geronimo, in the their hope to be like the Asia's Songbird.

It took more or less 200 local and national singing
competitions, of which 67 she had own, before Regine finally realized
her dream. It was 1984 that the public first took notice of Regine
when she won the grand prize in Bagong Kampeon, the most popular
singing competition in the country then, with the song In Your Eyes
as her winning piece.

After her victory in Bagong Kampeon, Regine formally entered
the music industry using the screen name Chona Velasquez Octo Arts
International signed her up for a recording contract but,
unfortunately, her debut single did not become a hit. It seemed that
the public wasn't ready for her yet.

Gifted with great talent coupled with perseverance, Regine
did not give up. She only needed a break that will prove to everyone
that she is a talent to reckon with. And that break came in 1987
through a guest appearance in Penthouse Live, the late-night show
hosted then by Martin Nievera and Pops Fernandez in GMA-7. Talent
manager Ronnie Henares was very impressed by her singing voice that
he volunteered to handle her career. He repackaged her and changed
her screen name to Regine Velasquez. And the rest, as they say, is
history.

STILL SEARCHING FOR MR. RIGHT

Regine's career is no doubt coming up roses but the same cannot be
said about her lovelife. It is a public knowledge that after her
relationship with singer-actor Ariel Rivera ended, Cupid has yet to
give her someone to love again. For the longest time, Regine has
become loveless that people often wonder why it takes her so long to
find a new love.

She once said in an interview that her ideal man would have
to have the face and height of Richard Gomez, the sense of humor of
Martin Nievera and the personality of Ogie Alcasid. Obviously, she
still hasn't found the perfect match. Is she still looking for Mr.
Right or has she lowered her standards through the time?

"Kung meron akong gano'n (standards)m masyadong mataas kaya
siguro ang tagal kong walang boyfriend. And I always say, why not? I
waited for so long, why would I suddenly settle for anything less?"
she reasons out.

"I want somebody who I can really trust, somebody who has a
great sense of humor for me that's important," she adds.

Although she doesn't complain nor is worried, people can't
help but worry about her. Even her father, Mang Gerry, often reminds
her that she is not getting any younger and, as a matter of fact, is
personally looking for the perfect man for his daughter.
"Gusto ko sanang makatagpo n siya ng lalaking magmamahal sa
kanya nang tunay. Pero wala talaga, eh, ayaw pa niya," Mang Gerry
says. "Nirereto ko na nga siya sa isang binata, pero siya (Regine)
( 'yung ayaw lumabas ng kwarto kapag bumisita 'yung lalaki."

"You cannot force such a thing naman," explains Regine. "I'm
really open to suitors kaya lang natatakot siguro 'yung iba sa akin.
All I can say is that they should not be intimated. I believe hindi
dapat itulak ang isang tao when love is concerned. If the right guy
is coming to you, I'm sure nandiyan na lang siya bigla. I think God
is saying, "You asked for success in your career, and I gave it to
you. So now, pagdating sa pag-ibig, be patient because I'm still
searching for Mr. Right for you.' So ako naman, wait na lang. It's
better to wait for the right person than sagutin mo ang kung sino
lang diyan and regret it later on."

Regine understands that these people, including her father,
are just concerned about her but she reiterated that it is her choice
to still be single until now. She says that she is now doing the
things she wanted to do because when the time comes, she will leave
everything behind.

"I know a lot of people are just concerned about me not
having anybody but it was a personal choice anyway," say Regine. "I
want to concentrate on my career, and I want to be able to do
everything that I wanted to do before I finally settle down. When I
settle down, that's it for me. Ayokong mag compete pa 'yung career ko
with my private life. Kasi, eventually, I'll really settle down na.
I'll stop. That's why I'm doing everything I can now so I won't tell
myself na, 'Sayang, I should have done that…' Ayoko 'yung
gano'n. 'Tapos sisisihin ko pa 'yung makakasama ko, hindi naman niya
fault 'yon, it was my decision. I don't like that.

"I'm a big girl already and I know what I'm doing," she
continue. "I'm very happy as a person. I never regret anything. Even
the mistakes that I have done before, I do regret them because if
that did not happen, I wouldn't be able to learn, I wouldn't to grow."

But how long does she see herself still single?

"Hanggang next year. 'Yun ang balak ko," jokes Regine.

THE PRICE NAME
-Janno, Ariel and Ogie

Regine discussing the references to Ogie:

SHE may not be involved with any man right hard for it and it's so
unfair that people are trying to (put him down). Nakakainis lang kasi
hindi nila naiintindihan what he has to go through to be able to
achieve what he wants in his career. It's also hard that his family
is not here, alam mo 'yon?"

There was also a time when Regine was linked to Janno Gibbs,
but together with him and his wife Bing Loyzaga, they denied such
thing ever happened. Last year Regine and Janno were again involved
in another controversy. In one episode of their Sunday musical-
variety show, SOP, Janno walked out of the show right after the
opening number. The reason for Janno's walkout was apparently because
of an incident in the dressing room involving his wife Bing, Regine
and Jaya. For a few weeks, the viewers of SOP did not see Janno and
when he came back, it was obvious that something's still wrong
between him and Regine. At the time of this interview, she and Janno
are already getting along fine but she's still mum about Bing.

"We're okay, we're much better now," says Regine about his
relationship with Janno. "We just work. We haven't really discussed
whatever happened before. Right now, I don't think I'm ready to talk
about it. Actually, even with him, I'm not yet ready to talk about
the whole thing with him. Parang right now, I don't see the point."

What happened to her and Ariel Rivera before is an open book.
The people also know that because of her relationship with the singer
actor, she and Ariel's wife, Gelli de Belen, has a silent war for
years. But time really heals all wounds. Early last year, Regine
agreed to guest is SIS, which Gelli co-hosts with sister Janice de
Belen, to somehow put a closure to their gap. Because of that, Regine
was able to renew her friendship with Ariel and made a new one with
Gelli. And to prove that everything's forgotten and forgiven, Regine
even agreed to do a duet and a music video for one of the songs in
Ariel's newest album.

Now that she's working with Ariel again after all that
happened, how does she feel?

"It's the same as before. We used to work together before.
Except now, we have a past," she says with a laugh. "Kasi, alam mo,
makakalimutin talaga ako, eh. Nakalimutan ko na kung ano ang nangyari
before. Although it took me quite a long time to really get over it,
I'm so okay na and I'm so over him, I'm so over the whole thing. And
he's a friend anyway. We started as friends and I'm glad we're
friends again."
