Night Healing
Michelle A. Bartley
December 1, 1998

I watch you, laying awake, pretending to sleep,
And wonder what it is you ponder upon.
Your eyelids twitch, telling me that slumber has not fallen,
Just your own little way of shutting me out. . .
Out of your thoughts. . . out of your world,
But not out of your heart, not away from your soul.

So many times I have rested here beside you,
I know your patterns of sleep, I know your reasons.
You turn on your side, so unaware of my continued presence,
As if that mere physical action could sever it all. . .
Make it all simply go away. . . fade into the blackness,
But some things can't be put aside, sometimes you just can't hide.

So exhausted you are from the life you have chosen,
A life so far removed from what and who you truly are.
But still you strive. . . strive to stay in the twilight. . .
In some secluded place. . . somewhere between two worlds.
Sadly though, one can not remain in that state for long,
Darkness overcomes when one stands too close to the edge.

Sleep eventually comes, for what we pretend often occurs,
And the dreams begin, not the pleasant visions of flowing light,
But of spiders, spider's weaving their webs. . . webs of deceit. . .
Webs of intricate beauty to lure in, and possess,
The choicest of those willing to walk within it's deadly weave.
And still, I watch. . . As you toss and turn in the night.

Reaching out, I stroke your hair with a hand full of love,
While wondering if you even feel the tenderness of my touch,
From this position, maybe I can give you some comfort and peace,
For it pains my heart to see you wrapped in that world, alone.
Moving closer, I nestle behind you, waiting for you to awake,
Taking in as much of you as I can, loving you, as I always have. . .
As I always will.
