Subject: Midnight Dawning In

It was a late 1999 Christmas evening
Wrapped in strands of anguish and blue
After all the presents were open, no sound was stirring
Not even from a mouse
Placid atmosphere was abruptly followed by sudden weeps
Eminent tears were sliding down Ellie’s cheeks
As she sat up there on the white futon, saying,
“I just wish I could find that rewind button,
and stay as the little kid I was!”
Small sip of egg-nog, then my mouth gets dry
The colors of the holiday begin to get blurry
As I can feel midnight dawning in on me

She said “Is there really a Santa Claus?”
My mom reluctantly replied, “No, there isn’t!”
Ellie then said things about seeing elves in Hallmark Cards
And Santa Claus in Coca-Cola commercials
Which gave her a sneaking suspicion that it was fake
Then that’s when my mom and dad felt the shame
And the candy cane in Ellie’s mouth began to taste bitter
When the fact that they had told a lie came to their mind
And Ellie got all upset and she was slowly losing faith
About God and angels and magic
She was planted down so hard, you can hear her start to crumble
As the midnight was dawning in upon her

It was a late 1999 Christmas evening
The tree garnished with garland of tears
We had all stayed up so very, very late
It was about a quarter to two
Ellie says, “Be honest with me. Is there really an afterlife?”
My dad says, “Yes, Ellie, I believe so!”
Then she talks about growing up, not being that little angel anymore
Her visions of aging were like decaying wings and halos
Then my dad wraps his hand over her shoulders
Says that she’ll always be that little angel inside of her
Says that you’d better to bed if you want “Santa” to come
Because the midnight had dawned on each of us
