Colin, spent a couple of hors yesterday lowering the front of my '64 squareback. This is the first time i have attempted this and, yes, it is straight forward.
Support on axle stands, unbolt top and bottom ball joints, take off shock absorber. Make a mark on the lower arm, where it slides on to the shaft. You will either need a pully or a copper hide hammer to free the lower arm. Once free turn it anticlockwise one notch at a time. I lowered mine a couple of notches and the drop has worked out at about 3.5 inches. Once adjusted hammer the lower arm back on insert the grub screw, reassemble the hub back on to the ball joints ( help may be needed ), bolt on the shock absorber and thats one side done, Now repeat on the opposite side. Good luck!
