Subject: Traveling at Night

A sliver of moon rises above the pass,

and I travel where the white light shines.

Follow a path, turn a curve and look under,

as every place is abandoned to night.

My balance rejoices in altitude, head

ringing like a million clanging bells,

for never in all my lives have I been

unleashed, so complete, in this place.

Without doubt the cold balloons my breath,

and I am a cloudmaker in the dark

between two mountains. I yearn to be feathers

falling from a hawk's wing, or the bloody touch

of foot to dirt that defines the physical way.

Instead I am the dark filled crevice,

opposing every condition of light.

So lead me to an end of feeling,

and make me a bed in caves.

Calcite waters will form stars

around my head, and all will be well

until I melt away in the morning.

I will come cascading down,

small and beloved,

onto the undersides of things.
