An Approaching, Belligerent Thunder

She has no more home
to claim as her own.

Dark stalking
the overgrown grass,

her steps catch
on the roots of giant oaks

that cleave the ground
of a conquered country.

She moves in quiet,
keeping secrets,

for in whispers
she might still be heard

or pleading for mercy,
she would doubtless be left with nothing.

It is her custom
that will be shattered

into bombarded lines
that travel the flashing sky

dusting her life along the ground
like the remains of exploded stars.

Hooves of horses will fall hollow;
the wagons will creak and groan

as she drags her skirts,
desperate through the dust.

The shadows of children dart
into flight from between the trees,

leaving prized possessions
interred in haphazard mounds of sand.

They are spectres that move
through the present air

where still the thunder
of war encroaches.

They must have fled, that night,
an approaching, belligerent thunder.
