Would you meet me here,
on the side of the Halifax road?
Wild rustles of leaves confirm
the lateness of my greeting, my feet
thrash and clatter the sides
of this muddled way. The soil is red
where it lingers in my bootheels,
mixed with the sweat of the work
of never knowing how I miss you.
Packed in the thickness of wool,
I have companions in my pockets,
the heft that is left of your garnets
and trinkets of love. Yet for as long
as you are never to be forthcoming,
I feel only a weight, that we never
agreed to this road, together, one day.
