To Abandon the Tree

There is one bright ray
caught in the tree near our window.

For seven days it has ricocheted,
bouncing and sizzling branch to branch,

genuflecting, performing its feats
at the astonishing speed of light.

We tried to catch it in a jar
but it scorched the hair from our arms

and knocked us groundward
in record time.

We thought we saw the face of it then, though
it never deigned to laugh at our foolishness

or even the spectacle of we two,
spread-eagled and awash in blue smoke.

Its voice recalls a nearby hive of bees,
low drone, interspersed with occasional trills

that resonate more of mosquitoes
fried in the outdoor zapper.

We sit in audience these days,
call the light Diva,

and marvel at excellent fortune. We
deserve a performing ray of our own,

even one so self absorbed
it cannot bear to abandon the tree.
