- Elephant Man - John Hurt -- Phyllis Gruber (best actor), 12:54:01 02/24/09 Tue
I first saw Mr. Hurt in The Elephant Man. I can't remember seeing such a remarkable piece of acting. This was quite long ago, maybe 20 years or so. I made it my business to see as many movies as I could that he made. I saw him in Midnight Express, I Claudius, the one where he plays Quentin Quisp, and many others. One that I really loved (I don't remember the name of the film) but it was a true story of a horse racer who overcame cancer. In every film he makes he takes on a different charcter with such effortlessnes and perfecfection that he always seems like a different person. He stays out of the limelight, but in my opion, he is one of the best actors of this generation. Now he has taken on sci-fi and action adventure and he is just as good as he was in any of his other parts. Just a remarkable actor.

Hiya
My names's Helen, Im 19 and come from Manchester, England.
Ive not been a fan of john hurt long. Ive seen him in ROB ROY (Im also a big fan of Liam Neeson- i find him very sexy and as good as actor as john!!) but I didnt really get into him until I saw 1984. I was mainly watching it because my sci fi class was about dystopias and the cold war and 1984 was mentioned so I decided to take it out of my uni library. Ive been renewing it as much as I can since!!! Ive been trying to win it on ebay but I keep losing out on the bids!!!!
I find john eerily sexy in 1984 and hes got anice voice in it too as well as in WATERSHIP DOWN.
Can anyone recommend any good John Hurt films?? Dont say Harry Potter because Im going to buy them anyway!!
Helen

- Early John Hurt -- John, 14:25:28 04/16/08 Wed
My earliest recollection of John Hurt was in a BBC(I think) play. I think it was called "The traveller" In it he was a medical representative that was having an affair with a lady doctor. I had just become a medical rep myself so I was very interested. I was late sixties or early seventies. Can anyone rember it?

I first saw John Hurt in "1984" and he did a awesome job as winston and I think nobody could have done it better.John is the kind of talent that makes you want to go out and buy every DVD that has him in it. Even if it's a small part (Hellboy)you can't help but enjoy his performance. In the Skeleton Key, he had no words but you can see feel the fright and emotion.
To be truthful, I can't think of anything right now that would give justice to a awesome actor.

- Much deserved -- Mark G., 22:30:44 09/30/05 Fri
I am so happy to see that there is a web site devoted to praise of this fine actor. He will go down in film history - almost undeservedly so, since he has done so much better work - as the one from whom the horrible "Alien" crawled out. It was one of the memorable moments in horror movie history.
But I will forever remember Hurt for some of the finest acting performances I have ever seen.
Has anyone EVER played the Fool in King Lear better than Hurt in the production I saw on American public television's Shakespeare series? I wish I had a tape of that production.
What in the world was the name of that show - I think starring Ryan O'Neil - when Hurt played the homosexual roomate to an undercover cop trying to solve a crime in the homosexual community. I will not stick up for that particular script. But what an acting performance from Hurt!
Likewise "The Field." I would watch that again and again (if I had a copy) to see Hurt's performance in a minor role.
When conversation turns to actors, I tell people that John Hurt is among my favorites - then have to distinguish him from the much less distinguished (in ability) William Hurt.
I am happy to see - now that I have come to look for it - that there are others who share my high opinion of this artist.

We get celebrities to sign items like Beanie Baby toys and photos for us to auction and we are currently running an auctions I thought your group might be interested in.
It is for a beanie baby signed by John Hurt.
It would make a great gift and we really love it when our items got to real fans - and you help a great cause at the same time!

- A 'Site' for Sore Eyes -- Lady J.B., 20:00:56 07/14/04 Wed
This is brilliant!!! All these years I've heard the name John Hurt, yet was never able to put a name with the face or vice versa. I was too young to watch or care about I, Claudius; and was age 9 and 10 respectively when Alien and The Elephant Man were in wide release. My parents wisely steered me clear, suggesting I see it when I'm old enough to handle the subject matter.
Well, I'm definitely older now [34] and a widow, and purely by accident, saw The Elephant Man on the Independent Film Channel. I was in tears, completely moved and dare I say....smitten- a bit of a girlish crush?!? :- } My in-laws are British, and Mr. Hurt bears a slight resemblance to my late hubby [far older than I & an absolute distinguished charmer] and his adorable brother.
Anyhow, after the film I went online to find every movie and voice over he'd contributed, and proceeded to purchase whatever dvd-vhs I could get my mitts on! After viewing John in The Hit , I found him--well--disturbingly sexy [tee-hee]!! Can't wait until my uncut/ uncensored dvd of Scandal rolls in. I'd read about the Profumo cluster "F" and it makes the Clinton and (B)Lewinsky fiasco look like teenagers making out on their parents' couch and now they're grounded. Ho-hum.
But Mr.Hurt is phenomenal!! Truly one of the unsung greats and that is criminal. When the man takes on a character, he owns it! You can see it and feel it and it stays with you. John brings truth to, and through his craft. I admire and appreciate that. There are sadly very few actors, male/ female & regardless what country they pledge their allegiance to; I can give praises to.
Oh well, to all of my fellow John Hurt fans and admirers: stay true. And to Mr.Hurt , if you ever read this [shameless wishful thinking], I hope that the fates will allow me to meet you one day. Nonetheless, your movies will always bring me joy. As you yourself commented about Dame Judi Dench, there's nothing YOU can't do. J'taime and thank you for giving me a reason to smile again.

- Lord of The Rings - Bakshi -- AVollaro, 15:49:23 10/19/04 Tue
I just thought of something rather obvious that no-one has mentioned - Mr. Hurt's unbelievable portrayal of Aragorn in Bakshi's Lord of The Rings.
Even though it was never finished, (or some say finished through the Rankin and Bass cartoons), John's quick wit, growling voice and perfect diction drew Aragorn from a lowly Ranger to a classy King-to-be.
I tend to compare Mr. Hurt's Aragorn to Sir Robert Stephen's (BBC Radio version), and cannot come up with a favorite. Both used their voices to carry such deep emotion that I was drawn to read and reread the LOTR books, ever trying to understand here they found the genius to portray him.
If you want a nice treat, try Bakshi's LOTR for some very nice John Hurt rumblings. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Recently Fox Movies Channel aired "Frankenstein Unbound". I was in for a treat and didn't know it! Having only small memories of this film as a sort of "made for video" piece, I forgot about it.
What a wild ride!
John was breathtaking in it. I cannot remember the last time I chanced upon one of his roles that showcased him in the prime of his life - and I'm hungry for more. I've only found one picture of him is "Frankenstein Unbound" - the still of him shooting a pistol, in black and white.
I wonder if anyone knows of other pictures (of John!)from that film.
I am a follower of great voices. His and Sir Robert Stephens are my favorite vocal performers...
Anyone seen John in "Lear" with Olivier? Heartbreakingly wonderful.

- John Hurt contact details? -- Paul, 04:44:12 11/18/03 Tue
Does anyone know of a way to contact John Hurt in Ireland? I met him and his, then?, manager Mim when I was backpacking in the Phillipines and spent many a night playing pool with Mim and backgammon with John. Both were absolutely lovely and completely approachable. Perhaps it was because I was Irish, or perhaps it was the desert Island location, but John seemed utterly at ease.
He was there to film for a movie on adopting children in Bangkok, with Manilla standing in for Bangkok, and was on the island during a break in filming.
In any case I've come across some old photos of the time and thought it would be nice to forward them on. Even a PO box or a management company would be fine. I just want to be sure they get to him. I DO know of a pub he likes to drink in when he's here in Dublin, but that's hardly an ideal drop off point :-/

- The Hit -- Klotho, 13:29:37 08/05/03 Tue
Hello, everybody!
I as wondering why nobody mentioned in the replies to Helen's question about great John Hurt Movies the wonderful movie "The Hit". (Quotation from the IMDb:Ex-gangster Willie Parker has betrayed his former "colleagues" and now lives in Spain where he thinks he can hide from their vengeance. But one day, ten years later, two hitmen (Braddock and Myron) show up and kidnap Willie. They are ordered to escort him back to Paris where he should stand trial. But it is a long way to Paris...)
John Hurt plays the role of the sinister, older hitman Braddock, and somehow, although he is so bad an brutal, he manages to draw all the sympathies to him in the end... A very recommendable, brilliant movie, although it is pretty much underrated for my opinion. Maybe because fans of mere action will find it boring ;-)
I have seen this movie for the first time about 15 years ago, and immediatly I became a fan. I have watched this movie over and over now, bur there's still something new to discover, especially because we don't get to know very much about the characters...it gives You so much space for Your own interpretation. So in the end, maybe everybody ends up with his own personal view. It is definitely one of the movies where I would like to call the director on the telephone ( Stephen Frears in this case) and ask him personally some quetions about the film....
What do You think? I would simply love to read Your opinions!
Bye bye, Klotho.

Dear John Hurt. I have to tell you what a great actor you are, I just watched Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Learning to play the mandolin could be an asset for a so called "actor" seeing as they can't act. When they roll the credits your name John Hurt should be first, then a person would know this film is worth watching. There is only a very few actors worth watching, and you are one of the best. I've loved John since I was a kid and throughout my young adult life. Whenever I was going through hard times I would watch his movies and read his interviews and I felt understood. Also, is anyone here an Alan Rickman fan? I'm just discovering him and I think he is a great actor and super sexy! Has anyone here met him? What is he like?

I saw a production on the satge in London 5 years ago and was really taken aback at its brilliance. After discovering a film of the play had been made many moons ago, I desperately searched the net for a copy but to no avail. It appears that the film was never transferred to video or dvd and is stored (somewhere) in its original 35mm format. Luigi Pirandello: Six Characters in Search of an Author
John Hurt heads a remarkable ensemble cast in this innovative production of PirandelloÕs classic play filmed here in stark black-and-white. A director and a group of actors shooting a film are interrupted by the arrival of six peopleÑfictional characters in search of the writer who has abandoned them, unused and incomplete. They demand that their story be finished, and to persuade the audience, recount their dark, strange histories. The classic 1921 play has been theatrically compared to such award-winning productions as BeckettÕs masterpiece, Waiting for Godot, and the 1960s drama, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. It sucked me in immediately with its accurate portrayal of late 50's America small-town life and issues (despite being filmed in New Zealand). I REMEMBER when life was like that, and all the Dads wore their old Army shirts and Khakis to do yard work in!
When the John Hurt character started to unfold, I found myself feeling as if I knew him, or had met him. His delivery, the planes in his face, the understated way he portrayed Chuck Langer, moved me deeply. I guess that's called good acting! I was in tears near the end, and at the same time was laughing at some of the plot situations.
If you love John Hurt, and want to see a GREAT movie, look for The Climb. It never made wide release.....what a shame..

- John Hurt: one of my favourite actors of all times -- Mariateresa Costanzo, 14:25:20 10/22/02 Tue
First of all, thanks for this site.
I will never forget the first time I saw John Hurt on television. I was 9 y.o., I was watching "Sinful Davey" and I fell in love with him instantly.
When I saw the closing titles, I remember I repeated his name in my mind, to be sure I wouldn't forget it. ("John Hurt... John Hurt ...."). By the way, the men I like are all red-head and look a bit like him.
He is one of the greatest actors of all times, and I wish we could see more of him in films nowadays.
Best wishes
Mariateresa Costanzo (Milan, Italy)

- Meeting John Hurt -- Lesley, 10:17:54 10/06/02 Sun
John is one of the greatest actors of our time. I had the privelege of meeting the great man some twenty years ago when he attended a showbiz awards ceremony here in London. And guess what? My friend and I were out and about in London's West End yesterday and we happened to bump into John in the street! He was very charming, a real gentleman, and he made time to stop and to chat us.
Mr. Hurt, you're a star in the real sense of the word.
My best wishes to you and all your fans.
Lesley

- Who else fancies John? -- Faith, 16:49:29 09/30/02 Mon
Yep. Another young woman lusting after Johnny Boy. He is quite simply brilliant in every role I've seen him in. The finest screen actor ever- I have yet to see him on the stage.I first saw him in 1984 and it was love at first sight. He was absolutely beautiful in The Field and All the Animals. Ten times more attractive than Sean Bean and Christian Bale! Who else agrees?

- John Hurt -- Aurora, 09:01:44 03/18/02 Mon
Hello all,
I've recently become a full fledged John Hurt fan. I first saw him in "I, Claudius" when I was 6. Caligula and Claudius were my fave characters then. I saw it again when I was 16(I'm 17 now) and really took notice of what an excellent job John did. A few months went by then I saw "Midnight Express" and now I'm hooked. :)
I just wanted to share that with fellow Hurt fans. I'm kinda surprised to see a web page for him. But glad.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here has written John Hurt or his manager and gotten a reply and/or an autograph. I'd really love to get an autograph from John Hurt.
Take care,
Aurora

- Afterplay -- klotho, 12:32:48 09/29/02 Sun
Hello, everybody! By chance I discovered that John Hurt is appearing at the Gielgud theatre in London in a play called "Afterplay" until december. I think it was written by the same author who wrote " Two plays after", where John Hurt was appearing as well last year. Has anyone seen it already? I´m considering to go there and would like to know if it is worth the money. Yet it would be so cool to see him live on stage... klotho.

- Love his hair -- Dr.Kimbel, 03:14:44 03/23/02 Sat
Hello all!
I'm really glad to find a site about the great John Hurt. Here in Germany none of my friends know him because he's not that kind of superstar. But I love him since I was 10 or so when I saw ''a man for all seasons''He reminds me of my favorite uncle who is also British and redhaired.I love that hair! Why there so little information about him.I miss a good biography. Is it true that he's divorced three times? Or is his marriage to Donna still lasting as I hope ?
And is he that complicated that it never lasted ?

- John Hurt - Irish Radio -- Mink Snopes, 19:15:16 12/05/01 Wed
The Thursday (?or Friday) immediately following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center/Pentagon there was an Irish radio station that dedicated the entire day's broadcast to the victims/survivors of the crash. As part of the tribute, they carried John Hurt reading from the works of Irish writers. Am attempting to locate the name of the radio station and from which city (?Dublin) the broadcast was made. Would anyone happen to know? If so, could you please let me know @ ur earliest convenience. I would sure appreciate it. Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Mink Snopes.

- Mr. Hurt's current project -- Cinéphilia, 09:21:19 11/25/01 Sun
Mr. Hurt is currently filming a "Miranda", a romance/thriller starring Christina Ricci. Kyle McLachlan is also in the cast.
The plot: "A librarian begins a passionate affair with a mysterious woman who walks into his library. When she suddenly disappears he travels down to London to search for her only to discover that she has three identities - dancer, dominatrix and con-woman. But which one is the real Miranda?" (IMDb)
We can also look forward to seeing him in director Richard Kwietniowski's upcoming movie, "Owning Mahowny". This crime/thriller stars Minnie Driver, with Maury Chaykin playing a supporting role.
John Hurt and Kwietniowski got along famously on the set of "Love and Death on Long Island", which is now the movie John is the proudest of.
