Subject: Looking Forward/Moving Back *NEW* Chapter 5-Part One

Chapter 5

Hannah nervously wiped her sweaty palms on her jeans and hitched her dance bag higher on her shoulder. She knocked on Justin's back door and waited for a response. She knocked a second time before a note on the doorknob caught her eye.

Hannah,
Sorry I'm not here to wish you luck, but I had to run into town with Belinda for some business. Good lucky today, sweetie, you'll do great. Just go on in if Justin doesn't let you in; he can never hear the knocking. 
Love,
Lynn.

Hannah smiled as she read the note a second time. Putting the piece of paper into her pocket, Hannah opened the kitchen door and stepped inside. The kitchen smelled of recent backing which Hannah inhaled sharply. She had eaten the most delicious foods since she hd moved to Millington almost a year ago. Lynn had taught her mother a lot of recipies too. Hannah and her family had been so openly embraced into the small town that Hannah felt like she had been there for more than a year. For the first time in her life she started to feel as though she was where she belonged. After she had gotten to know Justin, he had introduced her to his other friends. In such a small town, everyone knew everyone else and Justin was the local celebrity so Justin had a lot of friends. Hannah felt special to share the experience of auditioning with him, it created a unique bond.

Now Hannah just needed to see Justin to calm her nerves. She ran up the steps, calling out his name. When she got no response, she knocked on his door and tried to open it, but it was locked.

"Justin, come on, I'm gonna be late," Hannah said, knocking loudly.

"Hannah, I'm sorry, I can't go with you," Justin called out without opening the door.

"What? Come on, stop joking around and open the door." Justin was probably pulling some kind of prank, but it wasn't funny.

"Sorry, I can't go."

"Okay, why not?"

"I've got other stuff to take care of."

Hannah stepped back in shock. Justin was blowing her off? But why? She and Justin had gone to every singe audition together for the past year and this was going to be a really important one for Hannah.

"Justin, I need you there, please come with me," Hannah said as tears threatened to fall. She pounded the door with the palm of her hand, hoping Justin would open the door. She had sensed something was wrong with him for a few days now, but he hand never been so cruel to her before. "Please, Justin, please."

"I'm sorry Hannah, I can't. You'll do great," Justin said in an even tone.

The normalness of Justin's voice turned Hannah's desperation into anger.

"Fine, Timberlake, stay in there! See if I care. Actually, if you don't come out this instant and at least face me, you can forget I ever existed! I've been begging you and you don't care." Hannah paused as her chest heaved up and down from anger. "Are you coming out or not?" Hannah leaned her ear against the door to try to figure out what Justin was doing in there.

"No," Justin said flatly.

"Fine! Fine! I swear to you, from this day on I will never ever care about you again! You will never be more than just another face of someone I couldn't be bothered with."

"You do what you think you need to do. It's unfortunate that we couldn't work this out."

That was the last straw for Hannah. She snapped.

"Unfortunate?!" she yelled incredously. "Screw you, Justin! Sorry for the inconvenience then!" Hannah said in a sarcastic tone. "At least I know you won't be bothered when I leave!" With that Hannah stomred out of Justin's house, never giving it a second glance.

Hannah awoke with a start and saw darkness engulfing her. Her heart pounded in her chest and her breath was ragged and harsh. It took a few seconds to realize that it was still night time. A few remanants of her dream lingered in her mind and Hannah sat up straight with a sigh. That was the first time she had dreamed about something that had happened in her past, but it wasn't surprising. Her subconscious decided to finally let out what she had been trying to supress for the past two weeks. With her mind already reliving her first heartbreak, Hannah decided not to fight it any longer. For the first time since she had come across Justin, Hannah thought back to the last day she had seen her best friend.

She knew it was a childish argument and nothing to hold a permanent grudge over, but it had been the beginning of everything else. For the first time Hannah knew what it felt like to trust someone and be trusted. She and Justin had developed a strong bond over such a short time. Hannah had opened herself up to Justin so when he dismissed her like that, it felt like someone had ripped her heart out. Maybe that fight with Justin wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't been the beginning of everything else.

Reaching for her bedside lamp, Hannah turned it on and illuminated her room in a dim light. Her eyes feel on a small picture frame and her eyes started to water. That fight with Justin never had a chance to mend because within a month her mother had been diagnosed with leukemia. She had lost her best friend and found out that she'd be losing her mother in a short amount of time.

"Why did you leave, Mama?" Hannah asked the darkness as tears flowed freely down her face. She would give anything to hear her mother's voice one more time. It had been so hard becoming a woman with no female guidance. It had been nearly 6 years since the last time Hanna's mother had uttered her name and Hannah struggled to keep her mom's voice alive in her heart. Gently laying back, Hannah fell back asleep with a tear-stained face, curled up into a ball, cradling the picture of her mom's smiling face.

The sunlight streamed through the half-open blinds, landing on Hannah's eyes. She stirred in bed until she felt a sharp pain in her neck.

"Ow!" Hannah exclaimed with her hand flying to her neck. Her jerky movement caused the picture frame fall to her the side and off the bed. "Shit," Hannah said, remembereing her dream. She struggled to get up from bed to make sure her mother's picture was still in tact.

With a stiff neck, Hannah manuvered herself so that she was sitting against the bed with her mom's picture on the ground next to her. Luckily, it was still in one piece. Hannah picked it up gingerly and looked at it with a sigh.

She hadn't wept like that for a long time. Hannah silently scolded herself for being so weak. No amount of crying would bring her mother back and now her moment of childishness had left her with a stiff neck and a tear-stained face. The only good thing was that it was Saturday and she didn't have to dance for at least a couple of days.

Standing up took a huge effort and Hannah bit her lip from the pain. Carefully, she stepped towards the bathroom, trying not to move her head more than necessary. A long, hot shower seemed like the best remedy.

Thirty minutes later, Hannah stepped out of her bathroom admist a cloud of steam, thoroughly refreshed. Even though her neck was still sore, her entire body felt relaxed. Hannah pulled out a pair of loose fitting purple pants and a large gray hooded sweatshirt from her closet. She made her way into the sitting area and groaned at the pile of books awaiting her. She had a Sociology paper due on Wednesday and a chapter to read for each of her other subjects. Hannah quickly went over her schedule and decided that for once she had enough time to procrastinate for the day. She knew she would regret it later, but for today she planned on doing absolutely nothing. With a small smile, Hannah walked into the kitchen and grabbed an armload of food before making herself comfortable on the couch.

"Yeah, yeah, totally. No doubt, man. I'll be home by the 29th fo' sho'." Justin spoke quickly into his cell phone. The group was sitting in a limo that was making its way through the streets of New York. For security reasons, the guys had to check-in to a hotel outside the city. That meant commuting for rehearsals and the actual performance, but it was wroth getting a good night's sleep without any "visitors".

As the limo neared Central Park, the crowd got denser. The show didn't start until 6 pm, but people were already claiming their spots despite the cold weather. The driver maneuvered his way through some side streets and pulled up to a back entrance of a hotel right by the park. This was where all the artists would get ready before heading over to the huge stage that had been set up.

There was no rush in front of the hotel because the police had been called in to keep fans away. With a bag slung over each of their shoulders, the guys walked into the hotel. There was a large group of photographers in the lobby area. Farther up ahead stood the reporters and camera crews, waiting for short interviews to air before tonight's performance.

Before the guys had stepped inside the lobby, it had been bathed in a sea of murmurs. As soon as the 5 members of NSYNC stepped inside, everyone jumped into action and began snapping away. The guys obliged and turned to pose for the cameras for a few minutes before moving on to the reporters.

In order to get through all the reporters, the guys divided up into two groups, each answering questions about tonight's charity concert and about being back together again as a group. Those interviewers that got Justin inevitably asked about the status of his current love life, which Justin responded with a polite 'I'm single' remark. They made sure to thank the people involved in their performance before waving goodbye to the press and heading upstairs for wardrobe and make-up.

Around 6:15, the artists all exited the hotel from a side exit and got into limos that would take them backstage. Carefully weaving through closed off paths, the line of limos slowly approached the side of the stage where some trailers were set up for the performers to wait off stage. The presence of the limousines caused a ripple effect of cheering through the crowd.

Chris stepped out of the limo and stood silently, absorbing the surrounding atmosphere. It had been a good while since he heard such a large crowd and it felt nice. A sudden burst of cold air brought him out of his trance-like state.

"Oh crap, it's cold," Chris muttered as he hugged himself to create warmth. "Yup, my balls are definitely going to fall off."

Behind him, Justin just shook his head in amusement. Chris always managed to say the most out there statement in any situation. Following Chris up the small flight of steps, Justin entered the small trailer. Thankfully there was a small heater to keep the group warm.

All 5 heads turned towards the door when someone knocked on it quickly. A stagehand entered with a clipboard in hand.

"You guys are on in 30 minutes for two songs and then an hour after that for two more and the finale." Just as quickly as he entered, the man left.

"Sir, yes, sir," Chris said jokingly with a salute.

"Okay, whose wise-ass idea was it to have a concert at the end of freakin January in freakin NYC?" Joey asked with a shiver.

"I don't freakin know," JC said mockingly. "Besides once we're dancing around, we'll be warmer."

"Oh I hope so," Lance said through shivering teeth. The group huddled closer to the heater and waited until it was time to get on stage.

To Be Continued.....

Let me know what you guys think! Thanks!!!
