He takes a slow sip of the liquid in the crystal goblet before he begins.

"No excuses," he says quietly. "But there was no way I would've started that challenge without changing the terms. I don't know what he was thinking about, but...." He trails off here, running his finger absently about the rim of his glass.

"...I also wasn't about to get myself killed. Or put you in his custody. I suppose losing that would've been a bad idea, since I would have no control over what he did with you and RP had I died, regardless of any prior arangements."

He pauses, his gentle gaze still locked on hers. "I suppose the most anyone could say right now is...I'm sorry."
