Something like a mixture of anger and intense sorrow merges in his heart and pumps through his veins like an alien adrenaline. "What," he asks very steadily and deliberately, "gives you the right to judge me in such an untrue manner? What do want of me? What do you ask that I do differently? I'm sorry that I haven't been around in the past! I'm sorry! I was absent for reasons beyond my control, and this, by God, is not the first time I will regret it. But," his tone shakes slightly, "there's nothing I can do about it anymore. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I have done everything I can to try to get you to accept me. I have loved you and your mother...I have...I have..."
His eyes close before he slumps against the back of the chair; frequent overdoses of stress had taken their toll on him.
