CHAPTER 54
“First, she’s attacked, and now, you’re telling us she’s disappeared. Is that right, Mr. Samisen?”
Michael’s eyes narrowed. “What are you saying, Inspector?”
The balding policeman made a great show of writing in his notebook. When he looked up, his steely blue eyes were steady. “I’m saying it looks suspicious. An unexpected marriage, an attack, and now a disappearance.” His eyebrows rose dramatically.
“Look. If I were involved in my wife’s attack or disappearance, do you think I would have contacted the police and then waited around to answer questions?”
“Maybe you thought that would work in your favor?”
Michael took a step forward. “I must be bloody clever to have come up with such a diabolical scheme. So, what would I get out of it? Have you come up with that?”
The man gave a slow smile. “Now yet, but I will.”
Michael stood by while the police searched the house and grounds. He left a couple of voice messages with Tony and placed a call to his father. The older man seemed genuinely disturbed about what had happened.
“You know you’ll be the prime suspect, don’t you?”
“The Inspector has already said as much.”
“Great! That’s all we need is more bad publicity. Our stock has fallen since your last run-in with the law. You know our image is part our package, Michael.”
“I’m sorry you feel you have to remind me of that.”
“Oh, I know this isn’t your fault. Do you have any idea of what may have happened to her? Did she run away?”
“Maybe, but I don’t know how she got off the island. The next island is close, but there’s no sign of her there either. Anyway, she wouldn’t have had any reason to run away. She was getting everything she’d asked for.”
“And you hadn’t been pressuring her?”
“You mean to have sex? No.”
“And you hadn’t been fighting?”
“No. We were getting along quite well.”
“So, if she didn’t run away, then maybe she was kidnapped.”
Michael considered the possibilities. The motive would be monetary, of course. But who? Why attack her and then kidnap her? “I don’t know, Dad. Several officers are headed my way. Maybe they know something.”
He watched them approach with a sense of misgiving. Had they found her? From the serious look on their faces, he began to fear the worst. “Did you find her?”
The Inspector shook his head. “No, but we no longer think she left voluntarily. We found this by the water’s edge.” He held up a boat paddle. There was dried blood on one edge.
